How to model business processes in Swimlane layout
The swimlane layout is an alternative to the free-form layout. The swimlane layout rearranges the elements in a process diagram into a set of rows called swimlanes. The type of swimlane layout determines in which row the various elements in the process are placed. The purpose of arranging the elements is to make an unnecessary hand-off between elements in different rows easy to identify, and to aid in resolving bottlenecks and redundancies in the use of, for example, a resource or organization.Applying swimlane layout to process diagrams
You can organize the elements in your process diagrams into swimlanes according to different kinds of groupings. For example, you could group elements into swimlanes based on the roles associated with tasks.- Swimlane layout

- Switching the layout of process diagrams
You can change the layout that the Process editor uses to display a process diagram. A diagram can be in the free-form layout or in the swimlane layout.
- Adding swimlanes
A swimlane layout may not have a swimlane that you want. This occurs when you are adding new elements to the diagram or you want to reassign an existing element to a swimlane that is not in the diagram.
- Deleting swimlanes
You can provide more room in your diagram for other swimlanes or reduce the size of the diagram by removing unused swimlanes.
- Resizing swimlanes
You can resize a swimlane to remove excess height or add height to make arranging elements easier.
- Moving elements between swimlanes
You can move elements from one swimlane to another. Moving elements allows you to correct issues such as an unnecessary hand-off between elements in different rows and to resolve bottlenecks and redundancies in the use of, for example, a resource or organization.
- Fixing incorrect swimlane indicators
An incorrect swimlane indicator displays when an attribute of an element does not match the association in the swimlane header. If you perform analysis or run a simulation, the analysis or simulation uses the value in the element's attribute.
- Changing the order of the swimlanes
You can change the order in which the swimlanes display from top to bottom to put the swimlanes you are working with or want to prominently display in a position where it is easier to work with them or see their contents without scrolling.
- Adding associations between elements and swimlanes
You can associate one or more of the following elements to a swimlane: bulk resource definitions, individual resource definitions, locations, organization units, or roles. You can add a single association between a classifier value and a swimlane. This action provides a quick way of updating the attributes of the elements in the swimlane.
- Removing associations from swimlanes
You can remove one or more associations from a swimlane. This action provides a quick way of updating the attributes of the elements in the swimlane.
