Understand critical success factors for business process modeling

The following are some of the critical success factors for business process modeling:
  • Business driven
One important success factor for managing business today is to ensure that business goals drive IT. The integration between business analysts and IT personnel should be seamless (for example, using services) and responsive to the needs of the business. First, it is critical to understand how the business is run today (As-Is) in order to define process improvements.
  • Company culture
The company culture should be evaluated and understood in order to determine the best way to execute and adapt. Companies that are reactionary and use short-term thinking will require different strategies than those that are more accustomed to a long-term planning approach. Regardless, the employees must be aware of how the proposed changes will affect them. They must understand and accept the new processes and may even require incentives to succeed.
  • Governance
Governance is becoming increasingly vital in gaining control of large complex processes. For example, it is essential to establish standards for developing models and naming model elements. Following these guidelines will result in a greater understanding of the processes throughout the organization even though the models may be created and owned by multiple people.
  • Business goals
The definition of business goals that can be linked to business processes is crucial to the development of business measures. The best time in a process management life cycle to identify measures is after the To-Be process has been designed. In summary, successful continuous process improvement can be accomplished only if the business goals and relevant quantifiable business measures are well-defined.
