Document the flow of business items through a process

IBM Certification Test 992.2 - Modeling

Document the flow of business items through a process

Business items are the input/output of business processes and tasks.  They are business documents, work products, or commodities that are transformed in business operations. Examples of business items are manufacturing order, mother board, power supply, and memory chip (in a PC assembly process), itinerary and customer information record (in a trip reservation process), and passenger (in a transportation process).

Business items flow through a process from activity to activity (tasks, processes, or services within a process) when they are connected to each other. Business items can also be stored in a repository (local or global) to enable access by other unconnected activities as required.  Use repositories when you have several activities (tasks, processes, or services within a process) that need to access or share the same information. Rather than passing information along flows from one activity to another, you can instead place the information in a common place which several activities can then access.

To model the flow of data from task to task, you can associate business items or business item instances with connections.

The Business item utilization documentation report identifies all the business items in a model, including information about the utilization of each business item.
This report contains the following information about business items:
  • Business item name
  • Description
  • Attributes
  • Rules
  • States (displayed as IO states)
  • Activity that the business item is used by
